Tactics
“Presenting the fly deep is considered to be the key to success on Danish salmon rivers. This however is not always the case - when spring comes early and the river is not too high with water temperatures 9-10ºC, there is fun to be had for those who dare to play around, fishing high and fast can be very effective.”

Tackle
“On the Skjern river you can cover everything with a light setup, there are however days where strong winds demand for more power.

If I was to choose only one rod it would be my ZT 11’ 7 weight, paired with an Opti Runner. This setup can cover the water and various tactics and comfortably handle some of the larger salmon which run this river.”

Fly lines
“Short shooting-heads are my preferred lines to cover the whole river and allow me to cast even in the tightest quarters.
I have been using a Nextcast Zone in either float/1 with 10’-15’ tips from intermediate - sink 3 if fishing high. To go deep and dirty I bring an int/3 body with 10’-15’ sink 3 - sink 8 tips.”

Conservation
“Until recent years, the unique spring run in Skjern had been showing a steady recovery over decades.

In 2025, a previous quota for very limited harvest has been removed and the fishery is now 100% catch and release.

A tagging programme has been started to learn more about fish movement and the impact of C&R on spring run Atlantic Salmon.”
