  • Overview

Deplar Farm is a luxurious retreat hidden in the depths of northern Iceland’s Troll Peninsula. With comfort at the forefront of the lodge’s design, this home away from home is the perfect place to relax after an adventurous day in the wilderness.

Once a sheep farm in the heart of the scenic Troll Peninsula, today Deplar Farm is a remote getaway with added luxury and the perfect place for an Icelandic adventure. Surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers, the wilderness of northern Iceland is right on the doorstep and waiting to be explored.

Although staying at Deplar is an experience in itself, they offer activities all year, from heli-skiing in the winter months to fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking and whale watching in the summer.

Many anglers use it as a base from which to explore some of Iceland’s most famous rivers.

  • Fishing

If you want to battle the hardest fighting fish (pound for pound) in the world, head to Northern Iceland from June through September. Atlantic salmon and Arctic char challenge anglers of all skill levels. Eleven Experience has exclusive fishing beats on Iceland’s most prized rivers, including the Fljótaá, Hölkná, and Húseyjarkyísl. In addition, we can pull rods for the Big Laxa, Selá, Hofsa, and Nordurá rivers. Expert guides are Iceland’s river and fishing frontrunners. They’ll transport you in 4×4 vehicles equipped with flies, nets, rod mounts, leaders, and nylon. And most important, they’ll know which flies and tackle suit the conditions.

Fishing in Iceland will test any angler’s skill, and you will almost always have the water to yourself. Conditions are usually crystal clear, so anglers are often able to sight fish, which makes the catch all the more exciting. Most fishing is done with floating lines and fairly light tackle, and nothing beats a big fish breaking the surface to take the fly. Pound for pound, the fish are strong and will put up a good fight, especially if the tackle is light. In Iceland, all fishing is catch-and-release. Various waters will test the guide’s and the angler’s knowledge in fly choice, presentation, and ability to read the water.

  • Food & Cuisine

The basic Icelandic diet hasn’t changed much since the Viking days. Arctic char, north Atlantic salmon, lamb, and skyr are still staples, but the chef, Iceland’s 2018 chef of the year, Garðar Garðarsson, prepares them with modern techniques and a dash of international flavour. Neighbouring farmers and fishermen make regular deliveries, so menus are always source-to-table. Expect blueberry-topped pancakes, langoustine soup, and pasture-raised lamb, as well as craft beers from local brewers and wines from Deplar’s extensive cellar.

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL, TRANSFER TO HÖLKNÁ AND FISHING

Arrive in Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport (KEF), and catch another flight to Thorshofn before transferring to the Hölkná cabin. Our off-the-grid outpost is situated along the banks of the famed Hölkná River, where you’ll find more than 27 fishable pools over 10 kilometres. Spend a day fishing for fat North Atlantic Salmon. Tonight, you’ll dine on traditional Icelandic cuisine.

DAY 2 – FISH HÖLKNÁ AND OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Fish another exclusive Eleven beat on the Hölkná, where the surrounding scenery is as inspiring as the water’s bounty. After, hike to Hölkná’s most incredible waterfalls. Spend the evening cosied up in the cabin with a chef-prepared meal and fire.

DAY 3 – MORNING FISHING ON THE HÖLKNÁ, TRANSFER TO DEPLAR FARM, FISHING ON THE FLJÓTAÁ
